Canal Zone: The Suez Canal in Egypt was opened in 1869. The Egyptian government held shares in the company but sold them to Great Britain in 1875. In agreement with Egypt. British soldiers guarded the Canal Zone until June 1956. In July, because Great Britain refused financial help to Egypt for building the Aswan High Dam, President Gamal Abdul Nasser nationalized the canal.
Great Britain and France tried to restore international control of the canal.
Another of Hay's important diplomatic achievements was to help clear the way for the building of the Panama Canal. The Hay-Pauncefote Treaties (q.v.) with Britain, the sec¬ond of which he signed on Nov. 18, 1901, super¬seded the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty of 1850, which had prevented the United States from building a canal alone, and gave the United States a free hand to build, control, and fortify a canal across the Isthmus of Panama.
