Dutch Border: Regular daily launch trips are available on the lovely River Meuse between Namur and Dinant (3 hours one way) and between Dinant and the French frontier. A launch may also be used for the placid canal jour¬ney between Zeebrugge, on the coast, and Bruges. Along the coast, fre¬quent trams ply the entire distance, from Ostend to Le Zoute, near the Dutch border and to La Panne, near the French border. One-day and five-day tickets valid for unlimited travel along the whole coast and to and from Bruges and Fumes are available for a mere 70 and 200 francs re¬spectively.
The city founded by Gustavus Adolphus was settled both by the inhabitants of its im¬mediate predecessor and by Dutch merchants and craftsmen who had been invited to Sweden by the King.
The Dutch set their stamp on the city, draw¬ing up a plan in typical Dutch style, with canals and fortifications. The principal axis of the town was the Great Harbor Canal.See Also Rivers Border Rhodesia:The Land. Rhodesia is a tropical country, but most of the land lies along the Central Afri¬can plateau at an altitude of more than 3,000 feet, so that it has a reasonably comfortable climate, much like southern California's. The land is largely South African veld—grassland with scattered shrubs or trees—and is relatively arid, except from November to April, the rainy season.
Two great rivers border Rhodesia, the Zambezi on the north and the Limpopo on the south. The Sabi River flows southeasterly through the eastern section. Between it and the Mozambique border are the heavily forested eastern highlands.
The white rulers of one self-governing British colony, Rhodesia, refused to share power with the black population. After a great deal of international negotiation and a long guerilla war a general election was held in 1980, and a black government took office. To signal their new independence, Rhodesia was renamed Zimbabwe.
The last African country to gain independence was Namibia in 1990.
On The Other Hand See West Border:Parks.— The parks of Colorado are high mountain valleys, known as North, Middle, South and San Luis, with an elevation of from 6,000 to 10,000 feet, surrounded by ranges of mountains from 3,000 to 4,000 feet higher. The west border of the San Luis Park is formed by San Juan Range, with its high peaks, more than 100 of them over 13,000 feet, border¬ing it like giant watch towers. The Uinta Range is west of North Park. The Parks, or enclosed mountain valleys in Idaho and Wyoming, are not so high as the Parks of Colorado.
Since Israel became a nation in 1948 the Middle East has been troubled by decades of conflicts. Border and territory disputes between Israel and its Arab neighbors have resulted in sporadic battles and wars. One of the most significant was the Six Day War in 1967, which followed a long series of border incidents between Israel and Egypt, Syria, and Jordan. Arab opposition crumbled quickly, however, and a truce was declared after only six days, with Israel gaining land on the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Peninsula, and complete control of Jerusalem.
