Favorite Of Mary:

Favorite Of Mary RIZZIO, ret'tsyo, or RICCIO, ret'cho, David, Italian musician, favorite of Mary, Queen of Scots: b. near Turin, Italy, c. 1533; d. Edin¬burgh, Scotland, March 9, 1566. He went to Scotland in 1561, presumably as secretary to the ambassador of the duke of Savoy. Mary soon gave him appointments in her court, first as a singer in the chapel, then as a valet de chambre, and, in 1564, as private foreign secretary.

Soon after, Mary became friendly with [ames Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell. In 1567 Darnley died when his house was blown up, md Bothwell was held to be responsible. Mary's prompt marriage to Bothwell was lie signal for a rebellion, and Mary was nrced to abdicate in favour of her baby son >y Darnley, James VI. She fled for safety to ilizabeth I of England, whose heir she was. The English held Mary in custody, fear-ng a Roman Catholic conspiracy to make icr queen and depose Elizabeth. Finally in 1587 Mary was implicated in just such a )lot, and was executed for treason.

See Also All-rime Favorite Flowers:

Four-o'clocks or the marvel-of-Peru (Mirabilis Jalapa) are one of; my all-rime favorite flowers. First, they fit perfectly within the con¬cept of the night garden opening as they do with fresh, sweetly scented flowers in the late afternoon, always later than 4:00 unless plants are situated in some shade. Next, the bright tubular blossoms, up to 2 inches long and 1 inch wide, flower freely in shades of yellow, pink, red, vivid crimson, or even striped orange on yellow, persisting until cut down by frost.

HERE ARE some favorite herbs that are grown more for their decorative appeal than for culinary reasons. Lavandula angustifolia, commonly known as lavender, is a well-known herb used mostly in the flower garden. It has spikes of purple flowers and small, gray-green leaves, and is highly fragrant. For a splash of color, the pot marigold, Calendula officinalis (annual), is a good rustic-style backyard plant with vivid orange-yellow flowers, each with a dark eye. Tansy, Tanacetum vulgare, is another favorite plant for rustic-style backyards. It has deeply cut leaves and small yellow flowers held on tall stems. There are many other colorful ornamental herbs to brighten up the flower garden, including the nasturtium, Tropaeolum majus (annual). This has bright heads of scarlet, red, orange and yellow trumpet-shaped flowers and leaves that are rounded in shape. Bergamot, Monarda didyma, has spectacularly colorful flowers of red, pink, white or purple and the whole plant has a delightful fragrance.

On The Other Hand See Own Favorite Plants:

Then, of course, there's the not inconsiderable matter of your own personal preferences. Everyone has their own favorite plants. Think about what it is that attracts you most about them. Do you like them to be exotic, dramatic, pretty, colorful, graceful or unusual? Do you want them to provide a peaceful relaxing background or do you want attention grabbers? These are all considerations that will greatly influence your choice of plants. The pages that follow look at all the different types of plant that are available to you, including trees, hedges, shrubs, climbers, perennials, annuals and biennials, bedding plants, bulbs and rock-garden plants.

Colorful plants, or perhaps herbs, in simple pots by the door will look right. Make the most of vegetables and fruit bushes, letting them be part of the garden design. Do not be afraid of using rows of vegetables, herbs, bedding plants, or flowers for cutting, especially alongside a path. There is no need to grow only old-fashioned flowers because it is how the flowers are used and grouped that creates the rustic style, not what type they are. Choose as many scented plants as can be fitted into the space available, especially the many varieties of climbing rose and honeysuckle. The overall effect should be well-tended "disorder," a comfortable mix in which all the plants are allowed to run together. There will be plenty of weeding, but also a great opportunity to grow all your favorite plants in rich profusion.
