Fine Lawns:

Fine Lawns Increase or decrease the frequency of mowing according to the rate of growth, which varies from season to season, and may be influenced by bad weather, feeding, irrigation, the varieties of grass being grown and the general health of the turf itself. Different types of lawn require a different frequency of mowing. Fine lawns, for example, should be mown every two to three days, average lawns at least every seven days and preferably at intervals of three to five days and, for other sod lawns, mow at least once a week.

See Also Northern Lawns:

Northern lawns, except those of creep¬ing bent, are best cut to a height of one and a quarter to one and a half inches, or slightly higher on shaded areas and banks. In really hot weather raise the cutting height an extra half inch. Give the last mowing of the season so that the grass goes into winter two to three inches long. Lawns of creeping bent may be cut to a height of from one inch to less than half an inch. Southern lawns of subtropical grasses are generally mowed to a height of one inch. Temporary winter lawns of ryegrass are cut at one and a quarter inches. Mowing machines should be used when the grass is dry, scythes and sickles when it is slightly moist. For the kinds of mowers see Chapter 16.

Hill bought the Burlington. So Harriman bought heavily into the Northern Pacific, which now held a half interest in the Burlington. The hot contest for control of the Northern Pacific caused the panic of 1901. An agreement was reached establishing the Northern Securities Co. to hold the stock of both the Great Northern and the Northern Pacific. But in 1904 the U. S. Supreme Court dissolved Northern Securities and left Hill in control of both railroads.

On The Other Hand See Ordinary Lawns:

Hand mowers cut with a revolving reel of several curved knives that scissor against a stationery horizontal bed knife. They come with from four to nine knives. For ordinary lawns, five are best; for creeping bent lawns, seven. Hand mowers may be had with rubber-tired or plain metal wheels. Those with ball bearings run best.

Lawn makers often sow mixtures of grasses (sometimes clover is added) in¬stead of using just one kind. Mixtures are advisable for ordinary lawns. More than one kind of grass gives some insurance against catastrophic damage by pest or dis¬ease. Grasses with different seasons of maximum growth can be selected and tem¬porary "nurse" grasses used for quick effects and soil holding until the more per¬manent are thoroughly established.
