Golden Rose: GOLDEN ROSE, an ornament symbolizing spiriŽtual joy, blessed by the pope on Laetare Sunday (the fourth Sunday of Lent) and presented by him in recognition of outstanding service to the church. The custom originated sometime before the llth century.
Originally, the Golden Rose was a single rose, but by the 15th century it had become more elaborate and was often encrusted with jewels. Among those to whom it was given was an AmerŽican, Mary G. Caldwell, who received it in 1887 after having given a large donation for the foundŽing of the Catholic University of America. It was presented to the Queen of Belgium in 1925 and to the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal in 1964.
Ever since the Middle Ages the pope has, on Laetare Sunday, blessed a golden rose which he bestows on some beneŽficiary. Some Italian writers have declared that the term sub rosa is derived from the fact of consecrated roses being placed over the confesŽsionals at Rome to denote secrecy, the rose being a symbol of silence. In legend, Saint Dorothea, who suffered martyrdom under Fabricius, made a convert of Theophilus by sending him some roses from paradise. The rose is an attribute of Saints Casilda, Elizabeth of Portugal, Rose of Lirna, Rose of Viterbo, Rosalia, and others.See Also Practised With Rose:Budding, as practised with roses, is a variant of the same technique [12]. A bud of the desired clone, with a small spur of stem sheath, is inserted on to the exposed soft stem of a young briar (wild rose) stock. The species most commonly used is the very variable dog rose (Rosa canina).
In heathen mythology the rose was dediŽcated to Aphrodite and was claimed either to have been created from the blood of Adonis or to have been caused by the sea foam dropping from the newly created Aphrodite bursting into bloom. In mythological evolution the rose beŽcame a symbol of Eros, later of the Muses and of the Graces. Dionysus (Bacchus) also had a rose as attribute, hence this flower decoŽrated the guests at banquets. In this context it may be mentioned that the rose has always been the queen of wreath flowers and ornaŽmental expression of beauty. In antithesis the rose was a symbol of decay; hence an emblem of death.
On The Other Hand See Rose Polytechnic:ROSE POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE, a privately endowed engineering and science collegt for men. It is located five miles east of downtow Terre Haute, Indiana. Rose Polytechnic wa founded by Chauncey Rose, a philanthropist who helped build Terre Haute and who saw the need for a private engineering college in the area. Ro;-was incorporated in 1874, and the first da-graduated in 1885. The college offers a liberal education in engineering and science with seven degree-granting departmentschemical, civil, elecŽtrical, and mechanical engineering; chemistr mathematics, and physics.
The Bible but twice mentions the rose, and modŽern criticism tends to prove that in both cases it is a mistranslation and refers to some other frowth. In the Song of Solomon the "rose of haron" is mentioned. In historical reference we- find the rose mentioned as of religious sigŽnificance already in the ancient Zendavesta, and it was held in reverence by ancient Indians, Syrians, and Egyptians. But the rose does not appear as a motif in Egyptian art, though the Babylonians had their staves ornamented with silver roses as tokens of festivity.
