Large Outdoor Swimming: Recreation.—The public park system em¬braces 735 acres. There are 10 large parks and 19 small ones, four community houses with play¬grounds, a large outdoor swimming pool, and a zoo. The park system maintains three golf courses, 15 playgrounds, the majority of them lighted for night baseball. Fishing- and sailing are popular.
Indoor centers vary from a large club house, with its fifteen or twenty major activities, to the small room in a church or school, large enough for only a game of Table tennis or for small group meetings.
The National Recreation Association, in its biennial report for 1948 giving the number of various facilities and the records of attendance for 1,673 cities, towns, counties and school districts, showed an attendance of about 162,000,000 at 1,282 bathing beaches or swimming pools (in¬door and outdoor). Several other sports or fa¬cilities showed attendances in the tens of mil¬lions.See Also Outdoor Stations:Some hams simply enjoy chatting across town, while others contact as many different or exotic countries as possible. Hams also compete in on-the-air contests. Field Day, one of the most popular contests, is an exercise in emergency preparedness. During this contest, amateurs set up outdoor stations powered by batteries or gasoline generators, and contact as many stations as possible within a specified time.
Licensing of Broadcast Stations. There are more than 7,000 licensed broadcast stations in the United States, including approximately 4,000 AM, 2,400 FM, and 850 TV stations. Among these are 25 educational AM stations, 395 educational FM stations, and 184 educational TV stations.
On The Other Hand See Porches And Outdoor Rooms:Blinds made of bound wooden slats operated as the bamboo oneshave long been used for porches and outdoor rooms. With beveled edges, narrow slats and decorative finishes, they may also be used indoors. These are available in widths up to 15 feet 8 inches, with slats % inch or % inch wide. Finishes include paint and weather-resistant wood stains.
As a rule, slipcovers should be made of the medium-weight fabrics, such as glazed and unglazed chintzes, plain and printed linens, cretonnes, plain and striped taffetas, satins, sateens, and silk and cotton reps. Other materials which are often suitable are mohairs, plain and striped poplins, ginghams, and linen crash. Patterned fabrics may be found in practically all of the above-mentioned weaves to harmonize with period or modern rooms. There are also many plain modern fabrics with interesting novelty weaves and textures that are restful and in excellent taste for slipcovers in either period or modern rooms. The majority of plain fabrics require contrasting colors in the piping or welting to give them additional interest. Where economy is to be considered and no particular style is to be adhered to, there are many varieties of inexpensive cretonnes with all-over flower patterns which are always in good taste. Checked ginghams and percales are smart and effective for covers for small boudoir chairs, and can be found in striking color combinations. For sun porches and semi-outdoor rooms, striped awning material is very durable and makes striking and colorful slipcovers. There are also waterproof glazed chintzes and rubberized materials that are practical for such rooms. Slipcovers should be dry-cleaned to prevent shrinkage.
