Menuet Antique:

Menuet Antique RAVEL, ra-veT, Maurice Joseph, French composer: b. Ciboure, France, March 7, 1875; d. Paris, Dec. 27, 1937. He began piano lessons when 7 years of age, harmony lessons at 11, enŽtered the Paris Conservatoire at 14, and wrote his first known composition, Serenade grotesque for piano, at 18. His first published composition was Menuet antique, for piano (1895).

When very expensive antique or scenic wallpaper is used, the walls should always be covered in advance with muslin, and the paper glued to the fabric. This will permit removing the paper without tearing, if occasion for this should arise. Valuable wallpaper may be sized (covered with a coating of glue or gelatin) and then shellacked with white shellac. This protects the paper from dirt, dust, and finger marks and permits gentle washing with a damp rag. Care should be taken in applying the size to prevent the colors from running, as many wallpapers are printed with water-color or tempera paints that dissolve when liquids are used. The shellacking tends to give the paper a warm yellowish tone, gives it a slightly antique appearance, causes the colors to be more brilliant, and to be blended in a more harmonious effect.

See Also Antique Coffee:

Coffee, which reached the Pacific slope in the 1860's, led to profound ecoŽnomic and social changes. Owing to the lower capital investment required, Guatemalan agriculŽturists much preferred coffee to sugar as a cash export crop. Modern commercial practices and innovations in production (including the use of machines in final coffee processing) were introŽduced by the German growers who arrived after 1871. Coffee still accounts for nearly one half of the nation's revenues.

For himself, however, the collector may buy a picture of every item in his collection, in addition to a picture of himŽself surrounded by the objects. But it would be a mistake to make only simple record shots of, say, a man's antique coffee grinders and sell him small prints. It's much more profitable to do them up salon style, so that he can display the photoŽgraphs proudly. There are great possibilities, too, of doing albums on cerŽtain types of collections. A man who collects big things like ing down stories on things only started or merely planned.

On The Other Hand See Use Antique Wooden:

A mix of classic, cutting-edge and revamped furniture gives this room lashings of personality. The new Sofa has an elegant shape and neat wooden feet on casters, but to bring it up to date it's teamed with a cool contemporary armchair with sharp lines and a wooden and metal frame. An antique chair with wooden arms was simply re-covered in cream fabric to help it tie in with its modern neighbour. This mix of old and new extends to the room's other pieces. A contemporary, block coffee Table and a sleek nest of tables rub shoulders with a tall, skinny, dark wooden console Table that has old-style colour and good looks.

Since the opening of the 20th century, social and economic changes throughout the Western world have caused less sentiment to be attached to the word "home." Whereas formerly, houses were used by several generations of the same family, ease of transportation and communication have tended to make the home less of a pivotal center. The introduction of apartment house living has contributed to this movement. Many perŽsons have developed nomadic habits that have lessened their interest in permanent or costly types of decorative treatments. In the average room of today there is less thought allotted to the Decoration of walls than to any other part of the treatment or furnishings of the room. A few exceptions to this condition occur. Certain people have the means and desire to use antique wooden Wall panels of either European or American provenance and there is no doubting the charm of these decorative treatments if the balance of the furnishings permit modern conveniences and living conditions. In many cases, the antique woodwork is limited to a single wall, an overmantel decoration, or a built-in cabinet or bookcase. Reproduction of period Wall panelling is seldom advisable due to the inability of the average American craftsman to produce these forms correctly, or the painter to create the mellowness of the original treatments. The custom of applying wooden moldings to plaster walls to attain a period panelled effect is a ■ decorative falsity and always unsatis-factory. Wallpaper strips in molding designs are more permissible as an honest type of Decoration in itself.
