Roman Building Types: One of the most important Roman building types was the bath. Though bathing was their primary function, they were really afternoon social centers used by all classes with gymnasia, dressing rooms, libraries, gardens, and small shops like large counャtry clubs. The hot baths were warmed by hypo-causts, the flues for heated air and smoke passing under the floors and up through the walls. Among the grandest were those of Diocletian (r. 284-305 A.n.) and of Caracalla (r. 211-217 A.D.) whose cenャtral building measured about 370 by 700 feet, its complex interior superbly organized. Its timber-roofed nave and light arcades are not Roman in space and mass despite the Corinthian columns and entablature blocks. Neither has his building the colorful mosaics and pavements of the basilicas. The stiff foliage of the Corinthian capitals and the awkward responds show that Brunelleschi had not mastered Roman architecャture. Instead, his is a new style with its linearism and elegance.See Also Building Consists:Frank Gehry Unveils Design for Las Vegas Medical Center
Architect Frank Gehry has unveiled his design for a new Alzheimer's research center in Las Vegas.
The building consists a swooping trellis made of Gehry's signature contorted steel.
The trellis is anchored by a five-story boxy office building.
To supply the material that must be available for the new companion strand, four kinds of small molecular building blocks are used. Each block consists of one of the four DNA bases, one sugar unit, and three phosphate groups. Only one of the phosphates ends up in the new DNA. The other two are split off, and in the process they provide the energy to drive the synthesis forward. A large protein molecule acts as a catalyst to accelerate the reaction.
