Rose S":

Rose S" The Bible but twice mentions the rose s", and mod¬ern criticism tends to prove that in both cases it is a mistranslation and refers to some other frowth. In the Song of Solomon the "rose s" of haron" is mentioned. In historical reference we- find the rose s" mentioned as of religious sig¬nificance already in the ancient Zendavesta, and it was held in reverence by ancient Indians, Syrians, and Egyptians. But the rose s" does not appear as a motif in Egyptian art, though the Babylonians had their staves ornamented with silver rose s"s as tokens of festivity.

It is possible to simplify the pruning of these rose s"s by ' categorizing them into three groups—although there are many types that do not fit into this classification. • Species rose s"s (but not climbers) and their close hybrids • Japanese or Ramanas rose s", (R. rugosa) and hybrids • Burnet rose s" (R. sp/nos/ss/mo) and hybrids • The French rose s" (R. gallicd) • Hybrid Musks RIGHT: deep-pink blooms of the hybrid perpetual rose s", "Ferdinand Pichard." Before planting, cut off coarse and weak roots. Also shorten damaged and unripe shoots. During the first and second years, cut out a few old shoots in winter

See Also Great Rose Window:

ROSE WINDOW, a circular window, e>-pecially one divided into compartments by mul-lions and tracery radiating from the center, also called Catherine wheel or marigold window, ac¬cording to various modifications of the design. It forms a fine feature in the ecclesiastical archi¬tecture of the 13th and 14th centuries and K found most often in cathedral transepts and naves.

The cen¬tral porch was dedicated to the Virgin, that or the right to Christ, and that on the left to the Passion. Among the statues of the saints in the left porch are the statues of St. Nicaise and the smiling angel which is known as Le Sourirc de Reims (the Smile of Reims). The cathedral was severely damaged in World War I; the great rose window and the Angel spire, which rose 59 feet above the roof, were destroyed; the exterior walls were damaged and a hole was pierced in the stone Roof of the apse. John D. Rockefeller bore the cost, about $1,000,000, of repairing the damage and the rebuilt cathedral was consecrated in 1938. The oldest church in Reims is the abbey-church of St. Remi which was built in the llth century.

On The Other Hand See Rambling Rose:

There are three main types of rambling rose. These are described below: • Multiflora Hybrids: large bunches of small flowers, with stiff growth. Their pruning is detailed here in Group Two. • Sempervirens Hybrids: graceful ramblers, with long, strong growth and sprays of small flowers. Their pruning is described in Group One. • Wichuraiana Hybrids: these have graceful growth and quite large flowers borne in elegant sprays. They develop long, flexible shoots from their bases. Their pruning is described in Group One, although some rose experts suggest they can be left with little pruning, in such cases, however; they eventually form thickets.
