Selective Weed Killers: These are selective weedkillers. At recommended dilutions, they eliminate many kinds of weeds and leave the grass unharmed, or essentially so. Great care must be taken in using them. The chemicals 2,4D and 2,4,5-T, for example, are relatively harm¬less to grass but causes fearful distortion and eventually the death of most broad-leaved weeds, as well as garden plants with which they come in contact. It is easy to do serious damage if a breeze carries a mist of the spray on to trees, shrubs or other garden plants, or if a sprayer in which they have been is used for insecticides or fungicides without a thorough cleansing first. The 2,4D chiefly eliminates non-woody weeds; 2,4,5-T is effective against shrubby weeds. Some name-brand weed killers, such as Weedone, contain both. Some weeds, Oxalis, buttercups and purs¬lane, for example, are resistant to selective weed killers. Make several applications.
CHECK list of all pests and diseases that attack turf is formidable, posi¬tively frightening. But so is a complete enumeration of ills that afflict mankind. Faced with these possibilities it seems re¬markable that any child ever reaches adulthood. Likewise, if you read garden¬ing writings and heed advertisers of insec¬ticides and fungicides, it's hard to believe you can raise a lawn •without constantly battling tiny (and sometimes not so tiny) organisms. It's not as bad as that. Just as a human may get a few diseases, but not all that flesh is heir to, so your lawn is likely to suffer occasionally from one or more pests and diseases. But you won't get all or even a sizable proportion of those that may injure grass.
Crab grass is not the reason for a poor lawn but merely a symptom. Killing the weed treats an effect rather than the cause. By all means use chemical killers as aids in getting a clean start but after that de¬pend largely upon good cultural practices, such as regular fertilizing, mowing at cor¬rect heights, avoidance of injury to the turf that causes bare spots where crab grass can get a start and no daily sprinkling with water during the summer. (Weekly soak-ings in dry weather are O.K.) Chemicals to kill crab grass should not be regarded as cures, but as crutches for lawns suffering from crab grass sickness.See Also Prickly Weed Of Modern:Their object was to hold a succession of strong positions to delay the enemy without suffering too severe losses of their own, but to sacrifice themselves for the main body if this was necessary. They therefore, used to be mobile and consisted argely of cavalry. But nowadays a mechanical irmy is required as that prickly weed of modern varfare has made cavalry and massed troops Imost useless.
Many flowering or fruiting shrubs make excellent informal hedges. The shrub rose, Rosa rugosa (z3-8), grows quickly to make a dense, prickly hedge. Bright red hips follow the fragrant flowers. Berberis darwinii is neat, evergreen and prickly and has orange flowers in late spring; B. x stenophylla is yellow-flowered and less tidy. Cotoneaster simonsii is deciduous and has scarlet berries in autumn and winter; C. henryanus is evergreen, scarlet-berried, looser in habit. Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus) is ever¬green, with pink and white flowers.
On The Other Hand See Flowers And Weed The Containers:For healthy plants and prolific flowering, make sure your containers get the very best start and use the right type of compost. Keep this well-watered and regularly cut off the dead flowers and weed the containers. Summer-flowering plants will need feeding regularly.
