Shallow Ponds And Streams:

Shallow Ponds And Streams Some burrow in wet meadows only; some live in muddy ponds, or ditches; some live in lakes or sluggish streams; other species found only in shallow ponds and streams but swift streams with stony bottoms; most are commonly found in shallow ponds and streams streams Reproduction: When eggs ready to be laid, female thoroughly cleans under side of her abdomen and the swimmerets, rubbing and combing them with her claws; when eggs emerge they are stuck to swimmerets with a gluelike substance and are carried about for many weeks; when eggs hatch each tiny crayfish clings firmly to a swimmeret with pincers and is carried about for another week before it takes off on its own.

These turtles often sold in pet shops. Habitat: Almost exclusively in quiet waters of ponds, overflow ponds, backwaters of larger rivers and shallow ponds and streams ponds with much vegetation; also in sloughs Reproduction: Oviparous; 4-6 eggs deposited June-July

See Also Rearing Ponds:

As the fry grow and begin to feed they are distributed to other troughs and finally to rearing ponds, constructed in a manner to insure cleanliness and an abundance of flowing water. The young are fed on ground liver and are transplanted when several months old. They grow rapidly, but in the East never attain the large size which they do in their native streams. They feed on insect larvae, etc., and may be fed artificially on chopped beef or liver mixed with corn meal. For angling purposes the rainbow is inferior to the brook-trout, but is a fair sub¬stitute.

Although most fish farming is still based on techniques of partial culture, it is in the care¬fully controlled intensive-rearing system that most technological developments are taking place. For example, closed-circuit water recycling enables the farmers to remove waste products - mainly ammonia, urea and feed or waste solids - and return clean water to the rearing facility [3]. Fish grow more rapidly in warm water. For this reason, some fish farms are sited near power stations and farmers can make use of the warm waste water from cooling towers, previously regarded as a pollutant, in the recycling process to accelerate growth rates of fish and shellfish, thus saving on heating costs. In the United States the effluent from a thermal power station has been put to good use in the rearing of molluscs and lobsters, and in Britain flatfish have been grown in heated water from a nuclear power station.

On The Other Hand See Quiet Ponds:

Aquatic; frequents ponds, lakes, and quiet ponds streams, es¬pecially quiet ponds, muddy waters; wanders about on land during nesting season; hibernates during winter, probably in muddy bottom of habitat Oviparous; 3-11 eggs deposited May-August Adult pond turtles are a little too large to maintain with comfort in the average-sized terrarium, but make wonderful pets for a home garden. Only small turtles should be used for school specimens. Young are sometimes found among baby turtles sold commercially.

Becomes gentle and learns to take food from one's fingers Habitat: Variety of situations such as lakes, streams, ditches, ponds, roadside pools, shallow quiet ponds waters with soft bottoms and an abundance of aquatic plants Reproduction: Oviparous; 5-8 eggs deposited May-June Only young painted turtles should be used as pets. They may often be found among other baby turtles sold commercially.
