Smothering The Tables: The gas cylinders are to be located outside the space protected in a location not liable to l)e cut off in the event of a fire in the space. Where cargo spaces fitted with smothering for fire protection are used as passenger spaces, the smothering connection is to be blanked during service as a passenger space. The piping is to be arranged so as to provide effective distribution of fire smothering gas or steam. Where steam is used in large holds, there are to be at least two pipes, one of which is to be fitted in the forward part and one in the after part; the pipes are to be led well down in the space as remote as possible from the shell.
Originating in the Orient the rose became a popular growth with the Greeks, who in turn carried its cultivation into their colonies in Italy and elsewhere. The ephebes in their youthful capacity as servers of wine to the guests wore roses on their heads as did also the female dancers. In the orgies following the banquet roses were used in great abundance, smothering the tables, and the Latin term sub rosa is said to have originated from the rule that all acts after the arrival of the flowered Decoration were con¬sidered secret with the convivialists. Nero is said to have squandered $150,000 in roses at a single feast; the sybarites are said to have re¬posed on a bed of roses.See Also Christmas Tables:Christmas tables: Still life; icicle subjects . . . Useful Tables
One way of presenting much useful information quickly and easily is through the use of tables. On the following pages are tables covering nautical mile-statute mile con-^^^_ versions; time, speed, and distance problems; propeller selection for inboard engine propulsion; rope, cable, and chain strengths and uses; strengths of metals and woods; metric con¬versions; and weights and measures.
On The Other Hand See Multiplication Tables:Sometimes the most impersonal statements seek noticeable rhythms. Multiplication tables, the names of the states of the Union, and the principal parts of German verbs, when repeated to a regular beat, can be committed to memory as easily as poems.
Rhythm becomes an adjunct to meaning when prose conveys the mood of a people or the quality of a living voice. The Declaration of Independ¬ence is often spoken with rhythms that credibly express the resolution of the signers. In Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, modulations in the flow of the boy's usually matter-of-fact speech bring him vividly alive.
Vivid Designer Tables Fill Orchid Dinner
It didn't really matter that the dramatic cityscape twinkled outside the Rainbow Room's windows, since all eyes (and noses) were on the creative designs that graced the tables for the New York Botanical Garden's Orchid Dinner.
Thirty-four fanciful tables graced the scene-a pastiche of work created by floral, interior, event, fashion, and retail designers-all using the requisite orchids; dramatic elements infused both the centerpieces and Table settings.
