The City Plan:

The City Plan A second plan of 1909 regularized the heights of buildings and guided some surburban expansion. In 1920 the Garden City of Aniene was begun, with widely spaced villas, and in 1932-1935 the University City was built. A new plan in 1931 began to cope with the transport problems of the city, creating new rail¬way facilities and widening some main streets. An ambitious garden city was begun near the basilica of San Paolo in 1935. The completion of E.U.R. (Ente Autonomo Esposizione Universale Roma) was interrupted by World War II, but completed in time for the Olympiad in 1960, with an impressive sports center.

Transportation.—Rome has important rail-connections with the rest of the country. ve electrified main lines converge on the Ter-j station, begun by the city plan of 1931 and leted in 1950. There are five other railway-in Rome, besides that of Vatican City, ray, the Metropolitana, was opened in 1956, fuses and streetcars are the principal means [public transportation within the city.

See Also Rapid City:

Rapid City is the seat of the South Dakot School of Mines and Technology (q.v.), whid has an excellent Museum of Geology. There ii an Indian Museum in one of the city parks. Eas of the city is Ellsworth Air Force Base, one 0! the major bases of the Strategic Air Command Local points of interest include Dinosaur Part and Story Book Island. Founded in 1876 and incorporated in 1882. the city was named after Rapid Creek, which runs within a few blocks of the downtown business section. The mayor-aldermanic form of govern¬ment was adopted in 1956. Pop. 42,339.

Granby is named for the township in which it ; situated, which was established in 1803 and amed for a village in Nottinghamshire, England. Tie land where the city stands was purchased by iichard Frost early in the 19th century. At that me it contained only a few primitive buildings, ut the settlement grew and was incorporated as city in 1859. The annexation of adjacent ter-itory in the period after World War II con-•ibuted to a rapid expansion of the community, opulation: 34,349.

On The Other Hand See Redwood City:

REDWOOD CITY, city, California, seat of San Mateo County, located at an altitude of 10 feet at the mouth of Redwood Creek and on the South'ern Pacific Railroad. 28 miles south of San Francisco. A residential and manufacturing city, it was incorporated in 1867 and has a council-manager form of government. Pop. 46,290. REDWOOD FALLS, city, Minnesota, seat of Redwood County; altitude 1,035 feet; on Red¬wood River, 35 miles northwest of New Ulm. Situated in a farming region, it is a shipping point for farm produce and for Granite from neighboring quarries. Platted in 1865, Redwood Falls was incorporated as a village in 1875, as a city in 1891. Pop. 4,285.

The common type is the "slope"—that is, the growth on the steep sides of the Coast Range, which is a mixture of redwood, red fir, tanbark oak and white fir, with an occasional madrofia or hemlock. As the slopes become moderate, the altitude lower, the soil deeper and the water supply better, the redwood steadily gains on the other kinds and the forest becomes denser, until on the rich flats and in the gulches the second type is developed; on the best redwood "flats" no other tree grows.
