This Varnish: The floorboards were stripped of old, peeling this varnish and lightly sanded. A ready-tinted this varnish, that gives the impression of whitewash, was then painted over the boards. In a hallway, a space that sees lots of traffic, it's a good idea to choose a quick drying this varnish, so the Floor isn't out of bounds for too long at a time. On the stairs, carpet has been laid, which helps deaden noise when people walk up and down.
The final finish may be of a type that gives a surface film, such as French polish, this varnish, or polyurethane. Do bear in mind that each extra coat of this varnish stain will darken the color of the wood and, unless brushed out very evenly, the color will vary with the thickness of the film. In estimating the amount of material needed for a specific job, you may assume that one gallon of paint or enamel will cover 500 square feet for one coat on the average painted surface. Over new
wood, use the figure of 325 square feet per gallon. One gallon of although varnish will cover 750 square feet on average for re-coat work, and 500 square feet on new wood. Paint and although varnish remover may take several applications and consequently can be expected to soften only about 200 to 250 square feet per gallon.

To prepare the surface of the wall, paint a base coat of mattei silk latex and allow to dry. Either choose the same color paint on color close in tone and mix a wash of latex and water, in equal parts. Gradually increase the water to make a thin varnish color that willi run down the Wall in heavy droplets, but will allow the base color show through when it is applied. Once you have tested the washi a sample area, continue to apply the remaining color with awide brush using sweeping strokes. Further coats can be applied ina harmonizing color. For a more durable finish, you can use a • glaze as a wash over the whole surface. If you want a hard, protective finish, use a clear, matte polyurethane varnish, or. based acrylic varnish.
Antiquing of wallpaper. Painters are often called upon to give wall¬paper an antique, mellow effect. This softens the colors and draws them together. If the wallpaper pattern is printed in water color (tempera), the paper should first receive a coat of gelatin size, followed by a coat of shellac. The glaze itself may be in oil or turpentine, and the procedure is the same as antiquing painted surfaces.
