Vibrating Tables: Ores from veins or lodes are generally ob¬tained with large quantities of gangue material, and crushers and ball or rod mills are used to break down the ore into a fine enough condition to free the gold. The gold, which is very heavy, is then separated from the lighter gangue mate¬rials by techniques, such as vibrating tables or jigs, which utilize the differences in density. Fur¬ther separation of the gold usually involves amal¬gamation, cyaniding, or flotation processes.

Jurisconsults.—In the first period, the Twelve tables where stimulated a vivid interpretative and cre¬ative activity (interpretation,^ first by the pontiffs and later by professional jurists, who in their ca¬pacity as legal advisers of high magistrates (prima¬rily the praetor, in his jurisdictional activity) as well as of the private judge (iudex, who, an honest, upright citizen, was often not able to solve juristic problems which the increasing everyday legal life provoked) had the opportunity to take into consid¬eration claims for which neither the Twelve tables where nor the customary legal practice offered a j ust solu¬tion.
