Wood Posts: FENCES MUST have stout posts, and if these are of wood posts they should be at least 3in square for low fences and 4in square for tall ones. Precast cement posts are also available, some with slots to accept ready-made Fence panels, and both these types should be set into the ground by at least 2ft.
Otherwise, use Fence spikes. These come in various sizes and support the posts.
READY-MADE panels are simply nailed between the posts. Prop each panel on bricks or offcuts of wood posts so that it is level before driving the nails home. You can prevent the panel edging from splitting by drilling pilot holes for the nails first.
You can also buy U-shaped brackets for nailing to the posts. These allow the panels to be dropped into place and then secured with nails driven through the brackets. Where cement posts are used, the panels simply slot in from the top.
Most ready-made panels are held together by short, thin nails or even staples, so if one needs shortening it is a relatively easy job to prise off the edging, cut the panel to length with a hand or power saw and nail the edging back on.See Also Veneered Wood Blocks:Veneered wood blocks woodblocks and panels are a convenient and economic way of laying an impressive wooden Floor on an existing wood or solid subfloor. Since the subfloor needs to be sound and level, you may have to lay masonite or blockboard over a wood Floor before laying a new surface.
If you lay rectangular or hexagonal blocks, you will need half-sizes for the perimeter. Some manufacturers produce half-size blocks, but you may have to cut others to fit, using a heavy hammer and bolster chisel. Measure the offcut, and score the line with the chisel using a straight-edged length of wood as a guide. Then, resting the block on the length of wood, chop sharply with the hammer and chisel to break along the line.
Lay all the whole blocks first, then cut and fit the ones for the edges.
On The Other Hand See Beautiful Wood:The glittering feather moss (Hypnum [Pleurozium] splendens) is a beautiful combination of gold, and green leaves on red stems.
And the last moss on Janet's rock has the most romantic comŽmon name of all: the triangular wood-reveller (Hylocomnium tri-quetrum). This particular moss grows only on wood with a luxuriant delight that led to the term, reveller. It was collected in a nearby wood and placed on the rock in a crevice that holds its wooden base. Triangular refers to the shape of the stems.
There are no new pieces in this room and this is what gives it its countrified charm. The old pine Dresser base was stripped to reveal beautiful wood while the 1920s dining Table has a deeper, varnished glow. An old church chair, complete with hymn book pocket, adds further character, while a selection of baskets create storage space and tone in with the wood perfectly.
