Wooden Floor:

Wooden Floor This spacious hallway has been given a light, airy feel with blue paints and a pale wooden floor. A magazine rack keeps papers and post tidy, while a radiator gets a slick new look with a smart wooden cover.

Veneered woodblocks and panels are a convenient and economic way of laying an impressive wooden Floor on an existing wood or solid subfloor. Since the subfloor needs to be sound and level, you may have to lay masonite or blockboard over a wood Floor before laying a new surface.

See Also Sea- Floor Spread¬ing:

This out¬ward movement could push continental blocks apart or push previous ocean Floor rocks be¬neath the continents, which would explain the comparatively young age of the rocks on the ocean floor. In the Pacific Ocean, for example, the new ocean Floor seems to spread outward from a great ridge known as the East Pacific Rise. As the new Floor moves outward, the older seabed ahead of it should be forced downward into the deep trenches that ring the Pacific Ocean.

In each case the sense of movement implied by these dis¬turbances was away from the ridge, as would be expected from the theory of sea- Floor spread¬ingfloor spread¬ing. Sykes also pointed out that most earth¬quakes occurring in island arcs, such as Japan jand the Aleutian Islands, are indicative of tcompression. This would be the case if the ^spreading sea Floor is being forced downward |when confronted by the continental margins.

On The Other Hand See Under The Floor Difficult:

This will seal gaps and cracks, but has the disadvantage of making any pipes or cables under the Floor difficult to get to. Second, the Floor can be sanded smooth using a rented industrial Floor sander and small belt sander (see right). Small holes can be filled with wooden plugs or wood putty, but saw out and re¬place large areas of damage. To lift a board, punch the nails through and prize it up with a claw hammer and bolster. Tongue-and-groove board must be sawn along the seam with a padsaw to cut the tongue. The re-screeding compound used on concrete floors works on the principle that a liquid always finds its own level. The first stage of the process is to make make up the self-levelling compound following the manu-'iff'acturer's instructions. If mixed correctly, it should have a stiff pour¬ing consistency. Then all you need to do is pour it over the floor, where it will fill all gaps and cracks. Roughly trowel the compound over the whole surface and then leave it to level itself out and dry.

Bare wooden floors are beautiful in their own right. Stripped, carefully stained, or colored if desired, sealed, and decorated wi rug or mat, they can look stunning. If you are not fortunate enou to have an old Floor suitable for such treatment, you can buy wo strips or parquet tiles to lay over your existing one. They are not difficult to put down and can be very reasonably priced.
